The short answer
Pinterest shows "AI modified" when an image's IPTC metadata says AI was involved, when its classifiers flag the image, or when the creator disclosed AI use. If a real photo carries an AI IPTC value from an editing app, remove it and create a new Pin with the clean copy.
How Pinterest detects AI
According to Pinterest's help center, the label can come from:
- IPTC metadata, mainly the DigitalSourceType field with values such as
trainedAlgorithmicMedia. - Pinterest's classifiers, which can flag images with no metadata at all.
- The creator's disclosure that the Pin was made or modified with AI.
Only the first is in the file. If the checker above shows no AI marker and the label still appears, the cause is the classifier or a disclosure, and the route is an appeal through Pinterest support.
Who gets caught most often
Product photographers and shops
Background swaps and generative cleanup in Photoshop or phone apps write an AI source type. The product is real, but the file says otherwise.
Food, home and travel bloggers
Removing a stray object with Magic Eraser or Generative Remove is enough. See phone AI edits and the AI label.
Fixing it
- Check the original image with the tool and clean it if it shows an AI tag.
- Create a new Pin with the clean copy. Editing an existing Pin's text does not change its label.
- If the report is clean and the label stays, contact Pinterest support with the original file.
Images that were actually generated with AI should keep the label. Pinterest lets people filter AI content, and hiding it works against them.
Pinterest AI modified label: FAQ
Why does Pinterest say "AI modified" on my Pin?
Pinterest reads the IPTC metadata in the image and also runs its own classifiers. If the file carries an IPTC DigitalSourceType that says AI was involved, or if you marked the Pin as AI-made, the label appears in the Pin close-up.
How do I remove the AI modified label from a Pin?
If metadata is the cause, clean the image with the tool on this page and create a new Pin with the clean copy. For a label you think is wrong on an existing Pin, Pinterest says to contact its support team to appeal.
Does Pinterest read C2PA Content Credentials?
Pinterest documents IPTC metadata and its own classifiers. Many files carry both IPTC and C2PA, and the tool removes both, so the clean copy has neither.
Does the label hurt my Pin's reach?
Pinterest has not said labeled Pins are shown less. It does let people see fewer AI Pins in some categories, which is a reason creators of real photos want an accurate label.
Do product Pins and ads get the label too?
Yes, with a different placement. On promoted Pins, the label sits in the ad details behind the menu icon instead of the close-up view.
