The short answer
To remove Content Credentials, delete the C2PA manifest stored inside the file and the XMP fields that reference it. A browser tool like the one above does this without re-saving the image, so quality stays the same. It works on JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, MP4 and MOV.
What Content Credentials actually are
Content Credentials are the consumer name for C2PA, an open standard backed by Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Meta and camera makers. A C2PA manifest is a signed record stored inside the file. It can list the app that made the file, the edits applied, whether generative AI was involved, the ingredients that were combined, and sometimes the name of the person or organization that signed it.
Where the manifest lives depends on the format:
- JPEG: one or more APP11 segments holding a JUMBF box.
- PNG: a
caBXchunk. - WebP: a
C2PARIFF chunk. - HEIC, AVIF, MP4 and MOV: a top-level
uuidbox with the C2PA identifier.
Most files also carry an XMP pointer such as dcterms:provenance and, for AI output, an IPTC DigitalSourceType. The tool removes both, because Meta and other platforms read the IPTC field even when no manifest is present.
Which apps and devices add Content Credentials
The list grows every few months. Common sources today:
- Adobe: Photoshop, Lightroom and Firefly, especially when generative features are used.
- AI image generators: OpenAI image output, Microsoft Designer and others sign their images.
- Phones: recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models sign photos or AI-edited photos.
- Cameras: some Leica, Sony and Nikon bodies can sign captures in camera.
A credential from a camera usually says digitalCapture, which is not an AI claim. A credential from a generative edit says AI was used, and that is what can put an "AI info" label on Instagram.
Good reasons to strip C2PA
A real photo is wrongly labeled as AI
One generative brush stroke marks the whole file. If you shot the photo and only removed a sign or a stray hair, the label overstates what happened. See why Instagram says AI info on a real photo.
Privacy
A manifest can contain the signer's name, the device, the software version and an edit history with ingredient thumbnails. If you would not post your EXIF location, you may not want that either.
Smaller files and cleaner uploads
Manifests with embedded thumbnails can add hundreds of kilobytes. Stripping them makes files smaller without touching the image.
Removing Content Credentials from MP4 and MOV
Most C2PA removers only accept still images. This one also opens video. Rewriting a video container is risky because the sample tables point to exact byte offsets; deleting a box moves everything after it and breaks playback. The tool avoids that by turning the C2PA box into a free box of the same length. Offsets stay put, nothing is re-encoded, and the clip still plays in every player and uploads normally to Reels, Stories, TikTok and YouTube.
What a C2PA remover cannot do
Removing the embedded manifest does not remove invisible pixel watermarks such as Google SynthID, and it does not stop a platform from running its own AI classifier. Content that was generated with AI and looks realistic should still be disclosed.
Want to see what is in a file before you change it? Use the AI metadata checker: it is the same tool, and you can stop after the report.
Content Credentials remover FAQ
How do I remove Content Credentials from an image?
Drop the image into the tool on this page and press Clean & download. It deletes the C2PA manifest (the JUMBF block in JPEG, caBX chunk in PNG, C2PA chunk in WebP or uuid box in HEIC and AVIF) and the XMP fields that point to it, then saves a copy. Pixels are not re-encoded.
Is this C2PA remover free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark, no daily limit and no upload. The file is processed in your browser tab.
Can I remove Content Credentials from a video?
Yes. MP4, MOV and M4V files are supported. The C2PA uuid box is replaced by an empty box of the same size, so the video and audio streams stay byte-for-byte the same and the clip plays exactly as before.
Will removing Content Credentials lower the image quality?
No. The tool only rewrites metadata segments. The compressed image data is copied unchanged, so there is no second round of JPEG compression.
Does Photoshop have a setting to stop adding Content Credentials?
Photoshop and Lightroom let you turn Content Credentials on or off in their export settings, but generative features can still record AI use in the exported file. Checking the export with the tool on this page is the quickest way to confirm what was written.
Does it remove the "cr" icon on websites?
Sites that show a Content Credentials pin read it from the file. A cleaned file has no manifest left to show. It does not change copies that are already published.
Can a stripped image be matched back to its credentials?
Sometimes. C2PA supports soft binding: an invisible watermark or a fingerprint lookup that can find the original manifest in a cloud registry. Removing the embedded manifest does not remove a watermark in the pixels.
Is it legal to remove C2PA metadata?
Removing metadata from your own files is generally fine, and stripping personal data before sharing is a common privacy step. Do not use it to pass off AI-generated content as real or to strip credits from someone else's work. Platform rules on AI disclosure still apply.
